When I think of actors who’ve truly left an impact on me, Johnny Depp easily tops the list. From the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean” to the delicate emotions portrayed in Edward Scissorhands, Depp’s versatility is something I’ve always admired. It’s not just his on-screen personas that have left an impression; his off-screen presence is equally alluring.
Now 60-years old and boasting a commendable net worth of $150 million, Depp’s influence stretches beyond the cinema–he’s left an impression off-screen as well.

He’s seamlessly transitioned into the world of fragrances, becoming the iconic face of Dior Sauvage. This particular scent has garnered widespread acclaim, and honestly, it’s become one of my favorites too, partly because of its unique aroma and partly because of the Depp association.
What kind of cologne does Johnny Depp wear?
It comes as no surprise that the main cologne Johnny Depp wears is the renowned Dior Sauvage. After all, a recent report suggests Depp has reportedly renewed his sponsorship deal with Christian Dior to the tune of a seven-figure deal, which is one of the highest celebrity fragrance deals ever.
For comparison, fellow actor Robert Pattinson signed sponsorship deals with Christian Dior to be the spokesperson for Dior Homme for half the amount.
Depp’s loyalty and appreciation for Dior ran deep, particularly because the brand stood by him throughout his defamation trial against Amber Heard.
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Depp expressed his profound gratitude for the brand’s unwavering support during his legal ordeal: “They stuck with me through every single second, and that ups the stakes quite a lot for me: they trusted me, they believed in me, and they continued. That gesture is so noble and so rare.”
Here’s his first advert with the brand since his trial with Amber Heard, which I think beautifully captures the spirit of Dior Sauvage.
What Does Dior Sauvage Smell Like?
Dior Sauvage manages to strike the perfect balance between raw masculinity and refined elegance, with fresh bergamot and a spicy kick of pepper. I always find that the zestiness of Sauvage zestiness evolves beautifully over time, giving way to the warm and woody undertones of ambroxan.
It’s no surprise to me that Dior Sauvage is Johnny Depp’s favourite fragrance. According to a report from Marie Claire, Dior Sauvage was the best-selling fragrance of 2021, with a bottle being purchased every three seconds.
In other words, Sauvage is basically the world’s favourite fragrance!
What Are Johnny Depp’s Other Favourite Fragrances?
While Dior Sauvage remains a favourite scent for Johnny Depp, the star has been known to switch up his fragrances.
When he isn’t wearing Sauvage, he gravitates towards two other iconic fragrances, both of which also hail from the House of Dior.
Dior Homme
Dior Homme is an olfactory masterpiece. At its heart, this fragrance releases hints of iris, which I think add a slightly more powdery and floral essence than I can smell in Sauvage.
Coupled with the aromatic allure of lavender and robust notes of leather, this cologne has a depth that’s both modern and timeless.
I imagine that Johnny Depp probably wears this fragrance during the winter because it’s better suited for the colder months, given its warm and rich profile.
Eau Sauvage
Before there was Dior Sauvage, there was Eau Sauvage.
Eau Sauvage really hits you with the freshness of citrus, with rosemary and basil notes taking a little longer to develop. To me, the base has a classic chypre foundation, with mossy, earthy undertones.
I think it’s a really solid choice for Depp, and a great choice for middle-aged men.
What are Alternatives to Johnny Depp’s Favourite Fragrance?
Dior Sauvage stands tall as a fragrance icon but there are several other scents out there that can give you that Johnny Depp-esque aura.
Here’s three fragrances that I recommend if you want to smell like Johnny Depp but don’t necessarily want to splurge on Dior fragrances.
Paco Rabanne One Million
If there’s one fragrance I’d happily wear from sunrise to sunset, it’s One Million by Paco Rabanne.
At its onset, this scent unveils spicy and fresh notes that immediately grab your attention, very reminiscent of the initial allure of Dior Sauvage.
As it settles, One Million becomes a warm and seductive blend of leather, amber, and cinnamon.
Its deep masculinity resonates with that of Dior Sauvage, making it a worthy alternative for anyone aiming for that robust and alluring vibe.
Prada Luna Rossa Carbon EDT
Luna Rossa Carbon holds its ground as a subtly charismatic fragrance.
I definitely can’t say it’s as intense as Sauvage but it does have an understated elegance. It’s really a careful mix of bergamot, pepper, and lavender, with a heart of metallic and coal accents, and a base of patchouli and ambroxan.
All in all, it’s a wonderful masculine, woody option for those who prefer a slightly softer olfactory profile.
Bleu de Chanel
Chanel and Dior have always been neck and neck as far as luxury fragrances are concerned, and Bleu de Chanel stands as a testament to this competition.
A true contender against Dior Homme, it offers a fresh, clean, and profoundly sensual aroma. The surprising note of pineapple not only adds a unique fruity twist to the scent but I’m convinced it also pushes the longevity of the fragrance over the 8-hour mark.
As it progresses, notes of incense, cedar, and sandalwood come out, adding a lot of depth.
